Lego's mid-2012 Creator House
By R. Ferguson
I am the nut-job parent that you'll see in some of the other Lego reviews. I grew up with Lego and returned to it when I had kids. Obviously I am terribly partial to Lego, but I'll give you the best review I can so that you can make the decision that is right for your kids. I do not receive free sets or compensation for my Lego reviews.
This set arrived in June of 2012 and is part of Lego's wonderful Creator line (more on that below). The last time Lego did a beach-themed house was 2008 with set #4996. This year's set is a vast improvement, and though there has been significant price appreciation, the design is much better and it includes a far more interesting selection of hard-to-find bricks, especially the many light-blue bricks. The main build for this set is a modest two-story house with a red roof, stairway, upstairs deck, and plenty of doors and windows. What sets this design apart are the many small details. The beach has a sand castle and breaking waves. The side of the house has an outdoor shower with a hanging towel. There is the obligatory BBQ. The palm tree is all brick built. The second build is what might be called a two-story beach cabana with a little wooden pier. The last design includes two unattached buildings separated by a watercourse and footbridge. One of the buildings looks like a seaside drink/snack stand. All of the designs include the ability to remove roofs in order to gain access to the interior. Except for the seaside stand, none of the buildings have interior features. There is one mini-figure included, along with a surfboard.
Play-wise, this set works well with a wide range of Lego's other themes, especially the City and Friends lines (though my kids have no trouble placing Princess Leia and Harry Potter in a Creator house). It is mini-figure size, unlike some of the other Creator sets. And the set makes a great gift because if the child does not like it, they have the ability to make a wide range of other structures. At the very least, it is a good collection of very useful bricks.
So far, this is Lego's only Creator house for 2012. Lego had three Creator structures in 2011, two of which I still strongly recommend: 5766 Log Cabin and 5770 Lighthouse. Creator sets are made primarily out of general-use bricks and come with instructions for multiple builds. This is closer to how Lego was when I was a child, and it encourages kids to rebuild the structures either as the other designs or their own. The Creator sets, however, use more ingenious building techniques than what Lego offered decades ago. These are really marvels of miniature design.
Finally, at the risk of sounding like a shill for Lego, the Creator section of the Lego website has a nice collection of short videos that feature their own designers explaining advanced building techniques. These videos mesh nicely with this set.
Cheers

Great Set, Great Value
By Mike
This set is a pretty neat addition to the creator series. It has a lot of parts you don't normally get with other sets like a surfboard, like preserver, crab, fish, and grill. The set itself is very neat. you can open up the top to place stuff inside, or place stuff on the top floor as the back of the roof hinges open. It has a lot of doors and windows. It also has a lot of detail compared to other creator sets. On the side of the house there is a shower area with towel rack. It is creative how Lego designed it. You also get a seagull, but the design of that is different than the one you get in the Lighthouse Lego set. This one is a little smaller and not as detailed in the other creator set. You also get a figure exclusive to the set so its a great starter set for a child just starting out with Legos.

Incredible play value
By Just a Mom
My 12 year old daughter received the Seaside house for Christmas this year (her younger sisters also received Legos of various sorts). I knew she was interested in having some Legos (we had had a great time visiting the Lego exhibit in DC last summer) but wasn't sure if this kit was going to be a-build it-once-and-admire-it type activity. Once she (and her sisters) opened the sets, I didn't hear from them for hours. I had to drag them away for Christmas dinner. The 12 year old builds, rebuilds and then builds again. These have not gotten old at all. She absolutely loves the set. This is really a clever set with lots of fun details (lego waves, houselights, palm tree, etc!) She's a quiet, introverted person so the Legos are a perfect activity for her and helps get her away from the iPod/iPad screens. All three daughters (12, 10 and 6) build their houses together and then create stories with their Lego people. Then they tear them down and build them differently. I just can't believe that we were so late to the Lego party. I would have bought these years ago if I had known what play value they had.
My caveat would be don't be put off by the 7-12 age recommendation on the box. It made me pause prior to ordering because my daughter is 12, the top end of the given range. Seems not to matter at all. It's not too easy but construction of the different house styles is not too difficult. It's just perfect - just enough challenge but not frustrating. Really, it should be ages 7-100! I also love that the Creator sets are unisex and appeal to either gender. One more warning - some of the pieces are quite small and sometimes the girls need help prying pieces apart. Not a big deal. My other critique of Lego would be that there seem to be SO many sets and themes geared towards boys that it is hard to find sets that are gender neutral. My girls aren't into Star Wars or Harry Potter. But, these Creator sets are 100% worth the money and I'm looking forward to buying more if new models come out in 2013.
